We thought it is appropriate to start off CityScape with the most famous and incredible feature/attraction of our great city - The Gateway Arch.
Rising above the St. Louis City Skyline since 1965 - The Gateway Arch has made St. Louis one of the most recognizable skylines in the world!
Designed by architect Eero Saarinen as part of a competition to design a national monument in St. Louis commemorating "The Gateway To The West".  The Gateway Arch began construction in 1963 and was completely finished in 1965.  The structure stands 630 feet tall above the Mighty Mississippi River and spanning 630 feet from its' north leg to south leg.  It is an inverted, weighted catenary curve, the form assumed by a chain freely suspended from two points.
Taking a trip to the top of the arch is an adventure in itself.  Climb aboard one of the 14 capsule "elevators" (which allow you to sit comfortably on your ascend/descend) for your five minute journey to the top inside observation deck giving you spectacular views of the Gateway City.  On a clear day visitors are able to see over 30 miles visibility.
Below the arch is also more fun!  Visit St. Louis' underground city - featuring 2 movie theatres showing films about this National Monument, An IMAX Theatre, The Gateway To The West Museum, A Gift Shop and much more.
The Gateway Arch is open from 9:00am-10:00pm - and tickets may be purchased at the tram offices located below the Gateway Arch.  Tickets are $6.00 adults, $4.00 student 13-16, and $2.50 for children under 12.
